Unraveled: To become undone. To take apart. To destroy.
I thought I had it all with my well-respected job, Hollywood boyfriend, and glamorous lifestyle. Until the truth revealed a different story. In one day, after a single word, my carefully constructed life was obliterated.
But it’s only the beginning of my spiral. There’s much further to fall.
Then I meet him. He's the perfect man at the most imperfect time. It's only meant to be a one night stand. A last fling before my new reality sets in. But he has different ideas. Because he doesn’t know the truth. Once he finds out, I'm convinced he’ll realize this is too much for a new relationship. He’s sure to cut and run. It's for the best really.
After all, how can I possibly fall in love when I’m falling apart?
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Unraveled is a hard story to read. Not because it has issues, it’s quite the opposite actually. It is well written and engaging with a good pace, has great characters, and the romance is absolutely fabulous. The hard part is the subject matter, and although it’s revealed in the very beginning of the book I’ll still put it in spoiler just in case: View Spoiler » Layla, the heroine, learns she has breast cancer at the very beginning of the book, and most of the story takes place during treatment « Hide Spoiler.
Layla thought she had the perfect life. At least that’s what it looked like from the outside. When she gets devastating news, her world comes crumbling down and she realizes she needs to reevaluate everything. Moving closer to home, changing her priorities and starting anew, she’s not in a headspace to get back into the dating scene. Still, when her brother asks her to give his best friend a hand and buffer against a crazy ex by pretending to be his girlfriend, she sees no harm in it.
From the very first glance, Kellan and Layla share an impossible-to-fight attraction and their chemistry is off the charts amazing. He has too much going on getting his construction business up and running and Layla just has too much going on. However, their connection is too much to let it pass, and they spend the night together.
An amazing night that turns into a great day, that turns into the best week of their lives, but it’s at the worst possible timing ever. Kellan will have his work cut out for him, and then some, to convince Layla to give them a real chance. What she’s going through is just too much to drop on someone who’s only known her for a week, though, right?
Let me tell you right now, Kellan is the most amazing fictional human being ever. He was sexy and hot (I have a thing for hunky construction guys… but who doesn’t?) but he was also sweet and caring. While he had some issues to overcome, he just blew me away with all his loveliness and prowess.
Layla had a lot to deal with. I loved her fierceness and independence, and how she faced everything head-on. While I could understand her insecurities and where they were coming from (and I could totally relate as I personally went through something similar) it still bummed me out a little bit to see her struggle so much. I totally loved how Kellan was with Layla, and how he didn’t give up even when she was pushing him away.
Theirs was an incredibly lovely and inspiring romance, and at the same time scorching hot. Unraveled was an amazing story, one I couldn’t stop reading once I started. Heartbreaking and uplifting, I’m so happy I read it and I’m once again amazed by Ms. Bondurant’s writing.
