How much is too much?
Five years—that was the deal. Renzo Zulla gave up five years of his life to repay a debt to an organization that only wanted to break him before they could make him. Their way, their rules. He doesn’t move without their okay, even if his latest job puts him right in front of her. But the five years are almost up, and he knows exactly where he’s going first.
Love doesn’t follow rules …
Heartbroken and alone—that’s how she survives. Lucia Marcello is alive, but a part of her still feels dead without him. She’s spent far too much time running away from her past and the pain she constantly holds tight because it’s easier than hating the people who caused it. But life has a way of bringing you back when your heart never will.
Love doesn’t fade …
But time means nothing, and forever might be only an illusion for them. Because where fate doesn’t step in, reality does. If hate is a game you play with your heart, and contempt is the game you play with your mind … where does that leave love?
Vendettas don’t care about love.
It’s in God’s hands now.
Note: Contempt is the final book in a three-book Trilogy following the same couple.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Lucia and Renzo have been to hell and back since we last checked in on them in Harbor. I believe the title could have easily been Contempt and Contrition, for as much bitterness Lucia harbored, there were so many loved ones surrounding her trying to mend the bridges they had broken. It took 5 long years of pain and emptiness to reach the point where smiling was no longer an effort.
In this book we are introduced to The League and a glimpse into what it means to be a League Member. It felt like Renzo’s time with The League was a re-birthing of such without pain relief, an unbearable experience a lot easier to reflect upon then to live through. The price for Renzo’s freedom was extreme, not just on him but his loved ones as well.
Oh boy, Lucia showed her ferocious capacity to hold a grudge! Remaining as much as she could in exile from her family she got through life one day at a time. While the duration of Lucia and Renzo’s separation felt like forever, the writing remained fast paced with more angst than action.
The focus was on Lucia and Renzo’s ability to survive and as such romance took a back seat for the majority of the story. But we all know what happens after a much awaited reunion from time apart and Renzo did all to ensure Lucia was lavished with his attention as soon as he could.
Family played a pivotal role in Renzo and Lucia’s story. I loved the lengths Lucian and John took to make amends for the part they had in the heartbreak Lucia was forced to endure. Lucia’s love of family shone through with the time and effort she spent with Diego and Rose. Ultimately, it was Renzo’s willingness to honour the promise he made and the humility he showed that brought this fabulous love story to a beautiful ending.
