WELCOME TO ALPHAVILLE, where the she-wolves and alpha-males play. . .for keeps.
Renny Landry is a wolf on the run. Pursued by a shapeshifting stalker and his slobbering pack of killer coyotes, she is forced to flee her job as a librarian to find sanctuary in the wooded hills of Alpha, Washington. A well-secluded safe space for troubled shifters, Alpha is Renny’s last hope. But the first person she meets there is a gorgeous alpha male with fiery eyes, fierce tattoos, and one ferocious appetite—for her…
Mick Fischer thought he left his past behind when he moved to Alpha. But fate has a way of biting him in the tail when a female wolf shows up on his property. Wounded, desperate—and disarmingly hot—Renny brings out the snarling, protective alpha beast in Mick like no other woman he’s known. Can these two haunted, hunted wolves manage to mate for life…even as the deadliest past demons howl at their heels?
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This is one of those books that while I loved the concept and even enjoyed several aspects of it, it dragged on and on and on. I bet I put it down 30 times in the past couple of days which is kind of sad because I had the house to myself and could read to my heart’s content.
I loved the town of Alphaville and really enjoyed getting to know its inhabitants. From the wolverine librarian who just wants to retire to the overworked sheriff’s deputy, Zeke, they had me smiling. Zeke’s interactions with his sister garnered more than a few smiles. I found the mayor interesting, and want to know more about him.
Mick, the wolf shifter hero, had all kinds of things going for him. He’s grumpy, broody and more than a little broken, but also hotter than Hades. Life had not been kind to him and he wasn’t all fired up to jump into a mating when he personally knew the cost of losing everything.
Renny was likable enough but she just didn’t click for me. On the run from a crazed stalker, the first scenes had me thinking she was a tough little fighter. But then she turned into a helpless thing who couldn’t fight her way out of a paper bag. She was constantly arguing that since she was the target, she needed to be involved with taking down the crazy coyote and his band of whack jobs, and she was right. But then when they finally have the group in their sights and are planning the takedown, she wonders why she has to be there. My jaw dropped open.
Renny and Mick had lots of chemistry but I wondered if it was all about the mate bond. Renny especially struggled with the fact that Mick didn’t seem to be all in and I was right there with her. The sex scenes were hot the first couple times, but after a while it seemed to be more of a lather, rinse, repeat thing. I had no problem putting my iPad down in the middle of a sex scene to do other things which is unusual.
My biggest problem stemmed from the constant feeling that the shifters of Alphaville were chasing their tails when it came to finding the crazy coyotes. I felt like it took forever for them to gain any traction on the case and since a full month passed with them looking for them, it kind of did. When the big break came and they started making phone calls and asking questions, I wondered why they didn’t do that on the front end.
In the end, Baby, I’m Howling For You ended up being an okay read. I loved the town and its people but the story itself dragged on forever. If you need a paranormal fix it’s not a bad choice as it has all the elements you’d expect and the characters are interesting. Just don’t expect it to grab you and not let go.
