Maya Augustine needed to disappear—her life depended on it. When her path led her to the middle-of-nowhere Virginia, she found the perfect place to hide. A woman on the run, Maya had no business befriending anyone, let alone allowing herself to become involved with a man … especially after her last experience. Even so, she couldn’t help but become obsessed with the bruised, battered, and beautiful killer who walked into her life.
Grady Cain reached rock bottom. His past finally caught up with him, causing him to lose his edge at work and in life. Spiraling down a desperate path of remorse and guilt, Grady wasn’t expecting his refuge to come in the form of a woman. Day in—day out, she was the only thing he’d allowed himself to think about. To focus on. To consume him.
One was running. The other had nothing to run to.
Until these troubled souls crossed paths…
And two paths became one.
Warning: This author is a mom who runs a PG-13 home. This book is not PG-13. She would literally keel over and die if anyone under the age of 18 read this book. If you’re not of age, save this author from her untimely death, and go read about teenage wizards. They're awesome.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Wow. Just… wow. I’m amazed by Ms. Asher and how her books just keep getting better and better. I have been anxiously awaiting Paths, Grady’s story and it was totally worth the wait.
When we last saw him in Vines, he was all effed up and not accepting help. We were also left with a very pronounced inkling that mysterious Maya might be the one to get him back on track.
Clearly a woman with secrets, Maya has been trying to fly under the radar especially at Whitetails. Of course, between Addy’s friendliness and Crew and his crew being around, this was next to impossible.
Most of all though, she couldn’t have anticipated running into the likes of Grady, the sullen and moody alpha she’s been creeping on who suddenly becomes her PT patient.
Grady can’t seem to help his stalk-ish behavior towards his new neighbor. She intrigues him, beguiles him and gives him something to look forward to and focus on… When trouble comes knocking on her door he jumps at the chance of getting closer to her and being her protector… as the older brother to four sisters, that’s just who he is.
I really enjoyed Maya and Grady’s relationship. It was slow to build but once Grady decided what he was going to do he didn’t hold anything back. And I loved him for it. I particularly loved how he took his time, was sweet and considerate towards Maya but also fiercely protective and a wee bit possessive. He had a wide spectrum of skills, which came in handy on more than one occasion.
Maya was sweet and caring but also had some backbone. While I can’t say I would have made the same choices I could understand her course of action. Once she’d had enough, she put her foot down damn the consequences which won her major points with me.
With a great balance between action, intrigue and a truly lovely romance, I loved every minute of Paths. It was fun, light and sexy, totally entertaining and the perfect second installment to this series. I can’t wait to see what happens with Asa… Ms. Asher, get cracking on that writing!
