The first book in a seductive new series from Scott Hildreth, the #1 Amazon bestselling author of BRAWLER and HARD CORPS.
Once, I took down terrorists on the front lines as a marine.
Now I'm in the business of bad.
I've sold guns to people others might not approve of.
I've eliminated the criminals, the lowlifes and the thugs who've tread on my turf.
And I looked the Sicilian Mafia boss in the eye and told him to f*** off.
No one tells me no, unless it's their last word.
I didn't just act the part of bad—I lived it. Then she stumbled into my life.
I tried to stay away from her. Tried focusing on moving my merchandise. But one smile from Terra was like a shot to the heart.
She's mine now. And no one threatens what's mine.
I've seen a lot of terrible things in my life.
I grew up around lies and deception, and I ran away from all of them.
Until I met him.
I knew he was corrupt. I knew he was dangerous.
I should have stayed away, but my attraction to him, my need for him, overrode my logic.
Now I love him.
If he finds out who I am, we're done and I'll be nothing.
I never wanted to be the Mafia princess they tried to make me, but mia familia had other plans. And what mia familia wants…it gets.
Only Michael Tripp can save me.
Tripp and Terra's story continues in Book Two of Mafia Made, The Game Changer.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Why oh why, Scott Hildreth, did you feel the need to write an incomplete book? I freaking hate cliffhangers.
When I read Making The Cut, I was surprised that a guy could write a decent romance. The fact that it was an MC romance just cemented Scott Hildreth a spot in my authors worth reading list. I’ve continued to be mostly impressed so I didn’t even check out the book on Goodreads when I saw it available on Netgalley. I just clicked on it. This was a mistake since it wasn’t really clear on Netgalley (but it was on Goodreads) that it was a cliffhanger. This was not a good surprise.
The Gun Runner started out great. A hot guy saves a damsel in distress. I’m not usually the kind of girl who gets into heroes who wear suits, but Michael was clearly a badass and he won me over right about the time he removed his jacket and tie and kicked some ass (in other words, I fell for him at the 1% mark). He was an alpha, but not of the alpha-hole variety, who stayed true to himself. Even though he has a questionable occupation, it’s all about honor for him and I loved that about him. What was even more awesome was the man could dirty talk like no other and the sex scenes were super hot.
Terra was a different story. I liked her at first, but as the book went on she ended up getting on my nerves.
She acted immaturely and she was definitely the spoiled little darling she occasionally worried about being. By the end, I added selfish and judgemental. Her refusal to either end the relationship or bite the bullet and come clean to Michael did not sit well with me at all, especially when she had so many great opportunities to fess up. If you care for someone, you don’t leave them in the dark about a potential threat to their life if the relationship is discovered.
The star of this show was Cap. He was wise, funny, and kind of quirky in a tough guy way. He was a great addition to the story that had me smiling when he appeared on the page. I also loved the suspense that the two huge secrets created. The whole time I was reading I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. When the situation with her brother cropped up, I thought I knew how things would resolve, but then the book ended. Sigh.
Before the cliffhanger hit, I was leaning towards a 3 1/2 star rating. Although I liked Michael and his bedroom antics, Terra was just okay for me. I also felt like the book was dragging on towards the end and my frustration level was hitting Defcon 5 with Terra and her constantly putting off telling the truth.
For me, this book would have worked much better as a standalone as even with the issues there was still a lot to like. Unfortunately, I’m not sure I’m going to continue on when Michael and Terra’s story is complete. Even with the hot sex scenes, I don’t think I can take another book with Terra as the heroine.
