He knows how to score, on and off the ice

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she's going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di-Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.

This book may be unsuitable for people under 17 years of age due to its use of sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and/or violence.

By LilySmiling, smirking…Scored!

I picked a winner with The Score and had a ball reading it, it put me in such a fun…OK silly space, I feel the need to cut loose and share why. Here’s a glimpse of the kind of background chatting I encountered. There I was getting settled and comfortably into the rhythm of the book…I hear the blessed message pings on my iPad. I’m not far into the book at this stage and decide I’m in the space to share so I stop reading to chat with the girls:

Reading The Score!

Dean is the most loveable man whore out!

His banter is cracking me up

Normally with this much detail, my eyes would be rolling back and close to skimming.

Not with The Score, it’s providing me with extra laugh lines

Yep, Dean’s a crowd pleaser

Meanwhile, the other girls are reading KA’s latest book, Sebring and letting me know good it is, tempting me with news it’s a dark one with lots of action but for a change this dark queen is enjoying the light and smiling to her heart’s content. Today, it’s me and the hockey guy 😉

Dean is the kind of guy no one takes seriously and someone people either look up to or down upon. Womanising, partying and his carefree attitude means he has a reputation to behold. Reading about his antics he comes across as fun and loveable, he’s one of the guys and a key member of the hockey team.

Allie breaks up again with her longstanding boyfriend Sean and reaches out to her best friend Hannah for help. Hannah and Garret offer for Allie to hold out at Garret’s place and Hannah makes sure the other housemates know Allie is strictly off limits and to look out for her until they return. Surprising Dean with a knock at the door, Allie makes herself at home and settles in for the night, overlooking the fact she’s cramping his style. A night watching movies is not what Dean had planned but he assumes a good friend’s role because he knows what’s good for him.

“She needs a man who will take care of her.” His voice goes soft for a moment, but then it sharpens. “You’re not that man, kid. You’re incapable of that.”

Determined to put herself first and toughen up Allie is hell bent on not taking Sean back. It seems like a good idea to befriend Dean and avoid relationships altogether. The shenanigans they get themselves into end up taking each other by surprise…in more ways than one. Allie has a lot going on in her life helping her ailing father when she can along with the extra activities and keeping her ex at bay so fitting in a relationship is not a priority.

Allie has her eyes clearly set on an acting career and the pressure her ex was putting on her to fit into what he wanted was plainly not in her interest. In amongst the fun, there was a poignant message about finding your place in life and embracing it. A serious message but delivered well and what I took away most from this story was the humour which had me smirking and smiling for the majority of the book. A part of me didn’t want the fun times to end but it was a ride that had to end eventually and I’m delighted to have read The Score!

What I loved:

  • Dean’s self-control around Frank O’Shea!
  • The Hurricanes
  • STAG’s explanation
  • Compromising
  • Dean acknowledging his affluent upbringing without being obnoxious
  • Being a good sport on and off the rink
  • The banter
  • Allie following what she believed in
  • The 10-minute trick to moving on

Lily’s Rating: 5 Stars
