This Montgomery Has a Head for Business
Working for Zach Montgomery is challenging on many levels-coming from a wealthy and powerful family, he lives by his own rules and doesn't answer to anyone. But Gabriella Martine has no intention of backing down. She's used to handling stubborn men, and it doesn't hurt that Zach is smart, charismatic… and gorgeous.
And a Heart for Adventure
Zach's perfect world is turned upside down when a climbing accident leaves him broken, angry, and maddeningly dependent. In his slow quest for recovery, Gabriella is always there to help… but as Zach comes to see his beautiful assistant in a new light, he is forced to re-evaluate what it really means to be aman worthy of Gabriella's love.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This is book number 6 in a series about a family. While it can be completely read as a standalone I believe it would be nice to know the story behind all the other couples before jumping into this one, especially because the setting up for this story seems to happen in the previous book.
Gabriella has been Zach’s assistant for the last five years. At the beginning, they got along incredibly well, but a couple of months in, something happens and Zach turns into the world’s biggest jerk in the history of human kind. For some reason, ok, because she likes her job and obviously has feelings for him, Gabs stays on and takes the abuse, even when she is the perfect employee and he is being a complete asshat.
Zach seems to have always been a bit of an athletic adrenalin junky: jumping out of planes, running marathons and the like, it’s just that his last climb didn’t go too well. He fell off the mountain, sustaining an injury to his spine, a few other broken bones and he’s now home bound and recuperating. During this time he’s also acquired the disposition of a hungry bear with a splinter in his paw… and has been running through physical therapists faster than you can blink. He’s completely shut out the world, has been living in his head: he is self sabotaging his recuperation. When he doesn’t get as better as fast as he wants he just shuts down and stops doing the therapy, literally setting back his progress. He’s also constantly thinking he won’t get back to what he was, so why even bother.
Now meddling relatives had been watching Zach and Gabs’ dance around each other and think that it’s finally time for them to get on with it so they maneuver the situation so Gabs needs to work with Zach at his home until he’s able to go back to the office.
Both of them have a few issues to work through. Gabs has a less than stellar family and Zach has all kind of inner demons and insecurities that stem from his injury. Unless both of them get their heads out of their own asses, there’s no chance of them making it.
I understood where Zach was coming from, but he was too much of a sissy when it really mattered, letting his insecurities get in the way of his relationship with Gabs. If there’s one thing I don’t enjoy it’s an H whose insecurities will keep him from going after his girl. Plus, he was an epic jerk to her. Repeatedly. He should have had to work a little more for it in the end IMO.
I really wanted to like Gabriella, but she just let too many people walk all over her. I wouldn’t use the word doormat to describe her but at times it was a really close call, particularly regarding her family.
Overall, it wasn’t a bad story but I can’t say I’ll be There will make it to my favorites books list. Maybe if it wasn’t such a clean romance it would make up for a bit of the negative, but all the next mornings and a little afters, and the underwhelming epilogue just left me with a bit of a meh feeling after finishing.
