Derek Alexander is a retired Marine, ex-cop, and the top investigator in his field. Melissa Jones is a small-town girl trying to escape her troubled past.

When the two intersect in a bar in Arizona, their sexual chemistry is off the charts. But what is revealed during their "one week stand" only complicates matters.

Because she'll do everything in her power to get away from the past, but he'll do everything he can to hold her.

This book may be unsuitable for people under 17 years of age due to its use of sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and/or violence.

One line from the blurb drew me in…

Because she’ll do everything in her power to get away from the past, but he’ll do everything he can to hold her.

I can’t resist a man that can’t resist his woman =)

One to Hold is a novella length story. Derek and Melissa meet while at a vacation resort, share one very passionate week together, and then part. It’s obvious right from the start that Melissa is hiding something, that there’s something in her past that she is working to come to grips with. The author gives hints here and there, alluding to changes that Melissa needs to make in her life when she leaves the resort. We don’t learn the exact details until after she returns home. Unfortunately, her situation doesn’t leave room for a future with Derek.

He lowered his face to gently kiss me, and right then it was inescapable. The seemingly endless kiss he pressed, soft lips lingering against mine, tongue lightly touching my tongue, sealed it for me. He was everything I wanted. He was safe with me, I felt safe with him, and I wanted him to hold me forever so badly.

But in that simple acknowledgment, my heart sank in my chest. This blissful paradise we were sharing, our strange arrangement, was drowned by my dismal reality. I was not one he could hold.

One to Hold was definitely a sexy read. I especially liked that you didn’t have to wait long to get to the steam. It pretty much starts with a bang. Something about the way the sexual encounters were written was just very hot. I can’t pinpoint exactly why the scenes worked so well but everything just came together nicely.

“Fuck,” he groaned, the hand that was holding my breast now moved to my stomach, pulling me harder against him. Our thighs crashed as I moved on him, and the sensation of his rock-hard dick hitting my G-spot while his expert fingers massaged my clit conjured images I’d seen of women coming like men, wet and everywhere. Three more hard thrusts, and I was flying to the moon.

I dropped my head back and came so hard, my whole body shook. He kept pushing, and I gripped his hands, squirming and moaning, desperate for him to keep going, but unsure if I could take any more of this intense pleasure.

“Ooh, god,” I wailed, and we both slid forward onto the bed. He was still inside me gently thrusting, and I rubbed my thighs together, shaking but easing down from the rocket high I’d just hit, savoring the feel of his huge cock massaging my return.

There was a part towards the end that I thought was a little rushed but other than that, I enjoyed the story and thought it was well paced for a novella. As always with a novella that I enjoy, there was so much potential to make this into a full-length novel. I can see so many things that could have been explored including both Melissa and Derek’s past, but it really did work well as it was written.

I do think it would have been nice if this would have been written with alternating points of view. I would have loved to have seen things from Derek’s point of view instead of just Melissa’s. We did get one snippet from Derek at the end though but I wish there would have been more.

I was very surprised to know that this is the author’s debut adult novel. She will have another book coming out in January 2014, One to Keep. That book will be Patrick and Elaine’s story and I definitely plan to read it. Overall, I really enjoyed the book. It was a quick, sexy read and actually had a little surprise twist I didn’t see thrown in. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Thanks so much for your review! One to Hold is actually a full-length novel and not a novella. Derek & Melissa’s story continues in One to Protect (they’re sort of the “star” couple of the series) if you’re wanting more~

Glad you liked our review. On the length of a novella vs. a novel, opinions can differ but what really matters is Miss V liked the book. I’ve got it in my TBR and look forward to reading it.
