Deal with the Devil is Orphan Black meets the post-apocalyptic Avengers by USA Today and New York Times bestselling author duo Kit Rocha.
Nina is an information broker with a mission--she and her team of mercenary librarians use their knowledge to save the hopeless in a crumbling America.
Knox is the bitter, battle-weary captain of the Silver Devils. His squad of supersoldiers went AWOL to avoid slaughtering innocents, and now he's fighting to survive.
They're on a deadly collision course, and the passion that flares between them only makes it more dangerous. They could burn down the world, destroying each other in the process...
Or they could do the impossible: team up.
This is the first book in a near-future science fiction series with elements of romance.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I was sold on Deal with the Devil from the moment I got wind that Kit Rocha announced the title of their new series, Mercenary Librarians.
My excitement was driven by the thought this would be a similar read to the Beyond series but it was clear to me early on that this was no O’Kane story. In this world, women hold the knowledge giving them the upper hand, with Nina being the standout leader among her team. The compassionate support they gave to the community meant they were valued and trusted which in turn, kept them secure. Nina won me over from the beginning as a smart, caring and kick-ass heroine who just happened to be a librarian as well!
As soon as the Silver Devils make their appearance, the mystery kicks off and the suspense and action begin. The Mercenary Librarians give the Devils a run for their money and keep them on their toes. One particular scene where the women showed their savvy skill level cracked me up. Hacking into the guys’ communication system, they had their fun playing with them for a good spell before making their presence known. It was moments such as these that kept me turning pages.
Nina and Knox, the Librarian and Devil’s leaders respectively, were equals who on the surface made for a good team. You didn’t have to delve far to know they had their own agendas. Nina was as kickass as Knox was alpha.
The chemistry between Nina and Knox starts to simmer early on but both are so focused on staying on task that any notion of a relationship is firmly blocked. Knox is protective of his team so he struggles with his growing attraction to Nina which they are both determined not to ignite. I had no problem with them ignoring their chemistry as the suspense was my main reason for enjoying the story. When the tables did turn, I was disappointed, not that I didn’t want them to be together but because of the way it unfolded. It was from this point my interest in the story began to wane but I was too invested in the mystery to stop reading.
While I began this story with high expectations based on my love of the Beyond series, it wasn’t what I expected. At the same time, I was conscious that this is the beginning of a new series and made allowances for the world-building. I struggled with how quick the mystery surrounding the Devils’ interest in pursuing the Librarians was resolved. However, I must say there was a plot twist at the end I didn’t see coming!
