A made man versus the cartel …
The job was simple—a contract from a powerful crime family to retrieve Valeria Lòpez. A woman believed to have been forcibly taken by one of the major cartels in Mexico. Easy enough, right?
Christopher Guzzi thought so, but the details made it difficult. He didn’t expect to trick his way into the path of the cartel leader only to develop feelings for the woman he was meant to recover. That leader’s wife. Every step he takes is risky, and one wrong move could leave them both dead. Too bad that’s not enough to keep him away from Valeria as he tries to find a way to free her.
Hope is a dangerous thing.
Love is even worse.
Here, everybody plays dirty.
No one can be trusted.
So, how do they get out alive?
Note: Chris is book 3 in The Guzzi Legacy. It is a standalone novel.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Chris’ story was everything I hoped it would be and more! The suspense level remained high with the fear of how they could escape the clutches of the cartel. What I loved though was the promise of a new life, free of fear and full of unconditional love.
Acceptance and Innocence
When Valeria and Maria’s easy-going life was abruptly taken from them, she cautiously guided her young daughter, shielding her from the cruel and unforgiving world of her husband’s cartel. It was heartwarming to see them drop their guard when out of the watchful eye of Jorge’s men. A refreshing reminder that all the positive parenting Valeria did was keeping Maria protected from the heartless people now in her life.
Love and friendship
Good people gather friends wherever they go and Valeria was a good person. A mother who put her daughter first no matter what the cost. The stress it put her under was immense but also a powerful reason to never give up hope. Chris was a reminder of the life she had left behind. His caring nature was a tortured reminder of unconditional love, leaving her yearning for more and more time with him. The kindness he offered Maria had both mother and daughter smitten in no time.
Chris’s first mission is to win the trust of his enemy and then Valeria. One wrong move and a lot of people could get hurt or worse. Help and support come from all angles with the biggest disadvantage not being able to communicate openly with each other. Gestures and symbolic phrases were strategically put in place to shore up Valeria and Maria’s freedom. Mostly though, Chris was functioning on a wing and a prayer.
Four starkly different families are drawn into this story. The Guzzis, The Marcello’s, The Cartel and The League, who all bring their A-game to the table. Chris’s parents and twin brother were in fine form, allowing Chris to take the lead. A hard ask for Gian to step aside and trust his son’s skills and intuition. My favourite part was the bond that quickly grew between Maria and Chris. Together they melted my heart and proved chosen family members can be equal or better than the ones we get.
Cartel v Mafia
Valeria’s sister-in-law, Abril took me by surprise. She gave the cartel a softer edge that reminded me of a mixture of Emily and Adelita’s from the Mayans TV series. Obviously they are all strong, determined, not to be messed with women, and their passion to make a difference to the innocent victims in their world provided the glimmer of hope I needed to get me through the dark times.
The Guzzis added a touch of chivalry and charm to the nefarious cartel members. I cherished every subtle reference to the restraint Gian and Chris drew upon to maintain harmony between the families. While my preference is with Mafia romances, I would love to read a story based around Abriel’s journey that we only got a glimpse of in this story.
Chris’ story was a romance filled with action and suspense. What blew me was the heightened level of suspense that kept me turning pages. I am hoping we will see cameo’s of him and his family in the Guzzi Series and needless to say the next book, Beni has already been added to my TBR list.
