Siena Calabrese is no longer the prized daughter of la famiglia. Her transgressions against her brothers and family have stained more than just her reputation. Her best chance at keeping breath in her lungs would be to sit down and shut up like she was taught to do. She definitely shouldn't be feeding information to her family's enemies. And yet, she is still willing to risk it all for a chance at forever with Johnathan Marcello. After everything, how could she not?

The disgraced one …

Johnathan Marcello’s life and secrets have now been put on display for everyone to see. There's no hiding the things he's tried to keep hidden, but maybe that's the best thing that could have happened. Now he's about to walk straight into a war between rival mafia families, and he's got choices to make. His love is on one side, he's on the other, and everybody is playing for keeps. He'll play the game just as dirty as anyone else to get what he wants, even to the detriment of himself. For her, how could he not?

The shamed one …

It's time that the forgotten king takes back his throne. It's already been too long since it was taken from him.

But when has anything in this life been easy?

John and Siena were both in and out of disgrace depending on which angle they were being viewed from.  The flaunting of traditional expectations placed both families in a position where their options were quickly diminishing. Patience and precision timing held the key to John and Siena being able to be together.  For readers new to John and Siena, it’s important to note their story began in Loyalty and it needs to be read first.

Separated with only stolen moments keeping John + Siena’s hopes of better times ahead were all that was keeping the fated lovers going. I struggled with why the Marcello’s insisted Siena needed to remain where she was. My mind accepted it but my heart was another matter altogether.

Much to my surprise the setting didn’t halt the progression of the story as I feared it would. It was as much a time to reflect and bide their time until the moment for the Marcello’s to strike was right to do so. And wait they did, I was silently pleading all along for the tide to change sooner rather than later.

Siena is the wildcard in Disgrace, with her living on the edge by taking one day at a time. At times her choices were reckless, in some instances she was the angel of mercy. Taking every opportunity to ease the bitterness her mother inflicted upon her younger sisters amplified the danger she put herself in for all the right reasons. While her motivation was admirable, her actions meant she was skating on thin ice.

Unexpected twists in the plot and the personal challenges the characters faced were what made this story stand out. Friendships and family dynamics are strained as the fractions between families are strained to breaking point. Andino’s role again had me drifting between admiration and cynical concern. As John’s closest advocate, he had no problem gambling with John’s most valued treasure to gain an advantage.

Loyalty and Disgrace brought together an unlikely couple who believed love would carry them beyond the boundaries that kept them apart. Another great romance from Bethany-Kris!
