I’m a man without a conscience.
I deal in murder and mayhem.
I’m the best at what I do.
Frankie Helburn is supposed to be an easy job.
A means to flush her father out of hiding.
Except there isn’t anything simple about Frankie or the secrets she’s keeping.
She’s stubborn as hell and the sexiest god damn thing I have ever seen, sending dark, dirty animalistic desire coursing through my veins.
She’s cocaine with legs. A f*cking addiction that makes me question things I’ve never questioned before. Want things I’ve never wanted before.
I might have her, but she isn’t mine to keep.
If her father doesn’t show his face, she will be mine.
The synopsis to Up In Smoke caught my attention in a huge way and it’s a standalone so I decided to go against my usual MO of reading a series in order and grabbed it. I had read the first two books in the King series and loved them in spite of (or maybe because of) them being a crazy, OTT, completely effed up mess. As usual, I’m regretting reading a series out of order but I still liked it.
We all die after all. My death will just be a little sooner than most.
From the get-go, Frankie had a lot of qualities I adore in a heroine. Her father pretty much checked out when her mother died, meaning she basically raised herself. When she learned that not only was he a POS parent, he was a POS human being she decided to dedicate her life to righting his wrongs even if it meant putting her life in danger.
I’m a product of sin and violence. I was born with rage sizzling through my heated blood. With every crack of my knuckles, it consumes me until it is me.
I had a completely different reaction to Smoke. If I’d have had more time with him before he suffered such a huge blow, I may have been more understanding of his actions. Even then, I’m not sure it would have mattered. Why? Even knowing Frankie was an innocent, in his quest for revenge he kidnapped, threatened, and abused her and was perfectly willing to hand her over to be raped, tortured and killed.
“Are you afraid, hellion? Afraid of what I might do to you? Or afraid you might love it? Scream my name? Beg me for more?”
Knowing she could be taken at any time, Frankie had researched what to do when it happened. Once all other escape options had crashed and burned, she knew her only hope was to seduce her captor. You would think the insane chemistry between them would make this easier, but it turned the tables on her by putting her at risk of getting caught in her own trap.
She wants all of me, so I give myself to her. All six foot three of barren soul and misguided morals. All of my broken and black heart.
As much as I felt like I shouldn’t have liked Smoke, he slowly grew on me. He had a flair for the dramatic in his inner thoughts and his big proclamations that had me both rolling my eyes and grinning. I decided Smoke was a psychopathic drama queen and I liked that about him. His friends also helped me to see him in a different light. Zelda had me in stitches and Rage had me intrigued to the point I’m putting this series at the top of my TBR pile. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do.
