How far will a man go to get the woman he wants?
I’m a loan shark. Breaking people runs in my blood. The Haynes’ were supposed to be a straightforward job. Go in and pull the trigger twice. One bullet for Charlie, one for his sister. But when I saw Valentina, I wanted her. Only, in our world those who owe us don’t get second chances. No way in hell will my mother let her live. So I devised a plan to keep her.
It’s depraved.It’s immoral.It’s dubious.
It’s perfect.Just like her.
Book 1 & 2 in the LOAN SHARK DUET will be released back-to-back. DUBIOUS: 10 October 2017CONSENT: 14 November 2017
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I am on a roll with my reading choices lately! Dubious by Charmaine Pauls was no exception. A gripping read with an interesting cast of characters. The dubious or forced consent brought on by Gabriel’s infatuation with Valentina was, as it should be, a bitter to pill to swallow. Valentina’s predicament with Gabriel, though, was quickly overshadowed by his mother’s abrupt and cruel behaviour.
OMG, that woman! Magda was evil personified. I don’t think I read one moment where she exhibited an ounce of kindness. Driven by power and greed, she is blind to what she is potentially destroying by her harsh demands upon the family. Her constant reminders of the plan she had for Valentina wore thin on me early on and I was hoping Magda would meet her maker as soon as possible.
So what made this story so good? It was Valentina’s determination to survive and her unconditional nurturing of her disabled brother. His welfare was paramount to her, giving her the strength to endure the impossible. The other was her belief in the future, despite the gloomy years she would have to get through first.
Dubious is the second Charmaine Pauls book I’ve read and again with this book there is a strong connection with animals. Valentina is studying to be a VET via correspondence as well as working for a friend who owns a veterinary practice. Her understanding of animals helps her in a couple of instances providing a shimmer of light into her bleak life.
Gabriel’s gentleness with Valentina softened the reality of what the facts are. He fights for her all the while dodging the deal he has made with his mother. A typical anti-hero who I have a feeling has already started to weevil his way into my good books. Not quite though, he has a lot of good deeds to deliver before I forgive him too quickly! In the back of my mind, I envisioned him and Aleatha Romig’s Anthony Rawlings attending the same school of charm and coercion.
The book ends with a cliffhanger scenario that left me content rather than troubled. Fortunately the wait for the conclusion of this duet is a mere month away for those who don’t share my contentment!
