IF HE LOSES, SHE DIES
Her voice haunts his thoughts; her whispers fill his days
But when he discovers the woman of his dreams is real
He'll race the clock to save her before she's lost to him forever
Scarred by lightning, burdened with a power that gives him no peace, criminal investigator Xander Stone struggles to maintain his sanity against the voice that haunts him day and night-the voice of a woman begging him to save her.
Isleen Walker has long since given up hope of escape from the nightmare of captivity and torture that is draining her life, her mind, and her soul. Except...there is the man in her feverish dreams, a strangely beautiful man who beckons her to freedom. And when he comes, if he comes, it will take all their combined fury and faith to overcome a madman bent on fulfilling a deadly prophecy.

Holy crazy psychos, Batman! This romantic suspense will have you on the edge of your seat, biting your fingernails and possibly keep you up into the wee hours of the night because you just can’t put it down.
Xander and Isleen share an extraordinary link neither of them is aware of. Xander thinks the voice of the girl he’s been hearing for years calling out to him for help is nothing more than another voice in his head. A lightning strike left him with a sizable scar as well as super acute hearing and the amazing ability to be able to connect to other people’s minds and hearing their thoughts .
Isleen has lost track of how long she’s been in captivity at the mercy of a crazy woman set on torturing the evil out of her body. Her only respite are the dreams about Xander, the man that will save her… that is if he gets to her before she finally bleeds to death.
When Xander, at last, finds himself following the voice and rescues Isleen all hell will break loose. Xander and Isleen’s past are connected in a very complicated way, they have to figure out if they are the couple from the prophecy everyone’s talking about and they really need to figure out who is the crazy man killing people all around them.
There is a lot going on in this book. The suspense and intrigue are certainly fantastic, the romance aspect is surprisingly sweet and there’s even a bit of humor. Some twists in the plot I did not see coming and to say that Ms. Roads has an incredibly unsettling imagination is putting it mildly.
Still, I just couldn’t stop reading. Xander starts off as a complete asshole, but when he finally meets Isleen everything changes for him. Protective instincts and feelings he didn’t even know he could have come forth, as is the silence that comes with being with Isleen.
After years of being tortured in every imaginable way, to be still standing means Isleen was a very strong person. I understood how she couldn’t process all she had been through, but her being closed about it, meant I wasn’t able to connect with her as much as I’d like to. Her capacity to forgive was unparalleled and I found this incredibly inspiring, especially with things in the world as they are at the moment.
Race the Darkness was a fantastic romantic suspense, with less stress in the romance and more in the crazy-people-doing-fucked-up-shit-to-other-people aspect, the writing is captivating, the story completely original if a bit disturbing and a total page-turner.
