One night with a stranger…
Security expert Mark Matthews has loved, and lost, and has no intention of ever loving again—especially not a woman who thrives on her life being in danger. Now, hot, meaningless sex with strangers he had no intention of ever seeing again? That’s a whole other story. And it’s all life as a single father allows him to enjoy. But when he meets a woman who refuses to tell him her real name, the game is on, because she’s everything he swore to stay away from. Daisy O’Rourke has bad idea written all over her, but he’s in too deep to walk away now…
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I just can’t resist a good “devoted-single-dad” story. I just can’t. It’s against my religion, ingrained in my genetic makeup… or something.
Mark works at a security firm, ex-military and widowed to a military wife, he now dedicates his life to putting his little girl first. That’s why he keeps away from relationships, he can’t let his baby girl get attached to some woman who will leave her as she has dealt with enough loss as it is. That’s also why even though his friends at the agency insist on matching him up with Daisy, that’s just never going to happen. She is a cop, she risks her life on a daily basis and he simply can’t deal with even the idea of it.
Daisy has one rule only, don’t date military men. So even when her best friend swears this Mark guy is perfect for her she doesn’t want to even consider him a possibility.
Well, you know what happens when you form opinions based on pre-conceived notions: they come back to bite you in the ass. And that’s how Mark aka Chris meets Daisy aka Scarlett in a hotel bar and they end up having the most amazing one-night-stand.
Now you can imagine their surprise when they meet again face to face the day after, and they get introduced by their common friends. Thus begins a tug of war between what they think they should do and what the feel and want to do.
I’m not going to lie, the constant back and forth grew tiresome as the story and their relationship progressed, and they seemed to hit the same wall in a different place over and over. Fortunately, their chemistry is so good, and their sextivities so hot I was persuaded to overlook this fact. Mostly.
Both their stances came from an understandable place so I didn’t find their prejudiced notions as obnoxious as I usually do this kind of set up. Mark was a fantastic father, sweet and caring, definitely bossy in the bedroom department and sexy as hell.
Daisy was a total badass. I loved her and her determination to do what she loved and the reason behind her choice. I found her and how she dealt with the circumstances she had admirable really.
I wish they’d had more time as a settled couple, as most of their togetherness passes between the sheets… or against a wall. As it is, I still found His Best Mistake an excellent read. It had humor, sexy times aplenty, some introspection and two great main characters. And Mark’s little girl was just adorable.
