At the eye of a violent storm, everything is calm. It’s only when the storm shifts that your life explodes into chaos.

The $#*& is finally about to hit the fan for Zeth. After months of blissful quiet, the wolves are at his door, teeth bared and snarling, baying for blood, and the sinister elements of the Seattle underground are closing in tight. In other words, things are about to get bad. Real fucking bad.

Zeth Mayfair isn’t your average criminal, though.

If the New York mob wants his allegiance, they’re gonna have to force him to submit. If the cops want his ass in chains, they’re gonna have to catch him first.

He’ll kill the wolves. He’ll ride out the storm. He’ll make his enemies suffer. Zeth Mayfair is about to crown himself ruler of the city, and fuck anyone who dares to take on the king.

They will obey, or they will fall.

The choice is theirs.

Death is a bitch.

Sloane Romera sees death every day, looks it square in the eye, and she does not flinch. When Mason Reeves brings his little sister into St. Peter’s emergency room, a dark cloud hangs over the kid—one Sloane recognizes all too well. Millie is gravely ill, but it's not too late. Sloane's determined to do everything in her power to help her, regardless of the cost, regardless of how many rules she must break in the process.

Mason’s struck a deal with the devil, though. A deal that has painted a huge target on Sloane’s back. There’s every chance she’ll be dead by morning, and the man she loves might not be able to save her this time.

If there’s one thing Sloane knows, it’s that you can’t cheat death. When the Grim Reaper demands a life, a life must be given. Bargaining won’t work. Begging is futile.

A life for a life.

The debt must be paid in full.

EDGy Review

Reviewed LilyZeth Mayfair is my epitome of a bad-ass antihero where as Sloane Romero is a great mix of vulnerability and strength. Both are unpredictable and hence so is their story. My Kindle may have warped slightly from Zeth’s seriously hot account of how he could spend his free 90 minutes with his angry girl. I was with Sloane about her opinions on what should and shouldn’t happen, but I concede her weakness at how to convey her concerns 🙂

Chaos & Ruin is a series that has to be read in order. If you haven’t picked up a Callie Hart book before, you’re in for a treat, but start with Deviant, the first book in The Blood & Roses Series. The synopsis to Deviant should be the litmus test as to whether you are ready for all that is Zeth Mayfair.

I am the devil standing on her shoulder, after all. I am her dark prince, leading her down paths she would never walk alone.

Sloane get’s to showcase her passion for her profession through the intensity of scenarios situated in the hospital where she works. The sensitivity brought to the drama in the hospital from a patient/carer/nursing/doctor perspective felt spot on. Having ‘been there and done that’ as a parent, the scenes depicted were ones I could relate to. Two worlds collide when a patient comes through Sloane’s emergency department and pulls at her heart strings. The situation brings her into contact with an associate of Zeth’s she has yet to meet. It ends up shedding light on another facet of Zeth, transpiring into one of the most moving moments in the book.

His ‘busy’ is most people’s ‘dangerous’. I’d like to argue that it would be closer to my own ‘status quo’ but hey. Who’s got time for a dick-measuring contest when they have injured foreigners trying to catch their breath twenty feet away? “Sounds ominous. Care to elaborate?” I ask.

Oh, I could share so much more from here on in, but I am going to hold back because this book needs to be experienced first hand. All I need to say is be ready for Zeth; because he is in form and refuses to answer to anyone. What he does do though is take into consideration how every move or decision he makes will impact on Sloane. This is a series which follows the same couple and the ending is very much a ‘to be continued’ situation.

What I struggled with:

  • The basement solution – did I only detect one person on duty?
  • Manipulating the innocent and vulnerable
  • Loss

What I loved:

  • When Zeth details what he plans on doing for the next 90 mins
  • Zeth’s admiration for Sloane’s professional zeal
  • Michael’s respect for Sloane’s determination
  • Michael being able to read a situation with ease
  • The dry humour
  • Zeth’s tenderness
  • Mason – I hope we hear and see more of him!

Lily’s Rating: 5 Stars
