Grant Campbell, famous trick rider from Riverbend, Texas, thought it was over with Christina, the love of his life. But a chance encounter one dark spring night gives Grant hope that he can have a second chance. Things are changing in Riverbend, though--things that threaten to take Christina away from him forever.
Christina Farrell has tried to move on after her breakup with Grant, the hot Texas cowboy who stole her peace of mind the day he walked into her bar and gave her his sinful smile. But every reminder of him tells her it’s not over in her heart. Christina realizes she’ll never forget him until she makes some changes in her life, but before she can, a reconnection with Grant alters everything for her in an unexpected way.

This book may be unsuitable for people under 17 years of age due to its use of sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and/or violence.

A cowboy walks into a bar…

Grant is the second story in the Riding Hard series by Jennifer Ashley. This author is one of my favourite historical romance writers and when she decided to branch out into contemporary, I jumped at the chance. Unfortunately, they just don’t pack the same kind of punch. These books are a little formulaic a lot corny and riddled with unnecessary angst.

Grant and Christina had been in a serious and loving relationship when they try unsuccessfully to start a family. Their relationship crumbles and eventually they break up and try to move on. Christina starts a relationship with Ray, a bull rider, but her feelings for Grant never go away. Grant knows that Christina is the love of his life, but fills his time with buckle bunnies that follow him around. She works in the only bar in town, he works as a stuntman specialising in horses. Unfortunately for both of them their paths cross constantly, and they must endure seeing each other with other people.

This story is about the struggles they face on finding their way back to each other. One of the main problems they originally had but now must work on is communication. They get into arguments and instead of talking through their issues calmly, scream at each other, which then leads to screaming sex…lots of screaming going on and no real resolution. We know the couple have chemistry, because we’re told so, but I didn’t really feel it. They seemed to be together out of habit, more than true love. If you love someone, you don’t wait and watch them be with someone else, you fight for your happiness.

It’s all good. The family are there to support each other. The little town faces drama and all the brothers save the day and all the cowboys ride off into the sunset…or something like that.
