Despite having been besotted with Dante Garcea since she was a child, wolf shifter Jaime Farrow figures that it’s time to move past the crush. If he wanted her, he wouldn’t have ignored her flirtatious behavior, right? Hiding her intense attraction to him isn’t easy – especially now that they're part of the same pack again – but with bigger issues to worry about and with the submissive wolf act to maintain, Jaime is resolute on moving forward. Now if only the workaholic control-freak would let her…
As the pack Beta, Dante doesn't have the space or time in his life for a relationship. As such, he ignores his intense hunger for the willful – and sometimes crazy – Jaime. Yet when her flirtations abruptly end, Dante finds that he doesn’t like losing her attention. He finds something else too – Jaime's hiding something. Determined to uncover her secret, he sets out to break through her defenses, even though being around her intensifies his cravings for her. What he finds is a problem that Jaime is convinced not even a powerful Beta can solve.
After snagging an arc for the next book in the Mercury Pack series, I decided to read Spiral of Need again which led to rereading the series from where it all began: The Phoenix Pack. Recapturing the stories was not a hardship since I adore these books. They make me laugh. They make me cry, and sometimes they make me want to reach in and throttle a character or two. They put me in my paranormal happy place every time I read them.
Dante and Jaime both have seriously screwed up pasts that have affected them immensely in many ways. Both have strong reasons for never mating and they are bound and determined to never let it happen. Easier said than done with dominant wolves inside them who are determined to claim what they consider theirs.
As pack Beta, Dante is weighted with more responsibility than most can handle, and throwing a mate with a damaged wolf in the mix makes for an explosive situation. If they mate and her wolf goes rogue, they could both go down, along with anyone nearby.
Total opposites, Dante and Jaime were the odd couple in shifter form, but they worked so well together. He’s an OCD neat freak and she’s a complete slob. He’s mister perfection in tone and attitude, and she’s laid back and playful. But let me tell you when Dante finally claims his mate, holy shamoli it is freaking hot! You should read this scene on a no kids evening with your significant other.
I adored both Jaime and Dante for their loyalty, strength and the lengths they were both willing to go in order to protect each other. Once they get their heads straight that is! Dante never gave up on Jaime and her wolf, and Jaime never admitted defeat, no matter whom or what challenged her.
The battle Jaime and Dante fought to heal her wolf broke my heart and what happened towards the end absolutely shattered it. I don’t think I’ll ever reread this so many times that I won’t tear up when I read it.
Although similar in some ways to Feral Sins, Wicked Cravings did not suffer from second-in-a-series-itis. It absolutely held its own with its strong characters, action, and the heart-breaking story that unfolds. The best part (well, besides that claiming scene) is the ending as it allows you to bask in the rightness of two very deserving characters overcoming seemingly impossible circumstances and getting their HEA.
Spice’s Rating: 5 Holy Shamoli That Was Hot Stars
Is there anything hotter than the original Alpha Male? (or in this case the Beta, but… you get what I mean). I was worried to give this book a go because I liked the first one of the series so damn much and I wasn’t sure the author could pull it off again. But in case you don’t get it from my rating, she totally could and did.
Wicked Cravings was full of action, a little suspense, and enough romance and touchy-feely stuff to make me shed a tear or two and it had loads of hot, hot, HOT alpha sex. Is there any better kind of book?
I enjoyed how the author made her emotionally stunted hero get the kick in the head he needed to open up, and how our poor girl was able to finally overcome the trauma of her earlier life. I loved how there were a couple of twists I wasn’t expecting, and how all the other characters have an important presence in this book (just as in the previous one). You really feel how the pack is a big, confrontational, bad-mouthed, happy family.
There were a couple of lines and scenes that, to me, were a little too similar to ones on the first installment of this series. But they were so few they bugged me just a tiny bit and the overall awesomeness of the entire work overcame this.
I’m totally starting the next in the series, like, now. And will be eagerly waiting for whichever pack member comes next.
